DubRaJah - Repatriation

DubRajah - Repatriation / Dubophonic Records (c) 2021
DubRaJah has a unique way of blending the cultural elements from the countries he has been to, into his music. Being an anthropologist and ethnomusicologist, he has made many ethnographical expeditions in different parts of Africa, Asia and Europe, produced several films about indigenous peoples and studied their native music.

His journey on our label started in 2014 with the EP Enkang, introducing a style that fuses dub with ethnic elements, samples and recordings made through his various journeys. In 2017 came the LP Reprise and 2019 the EP Nilotic.

This is his fourth release, his second album entitled Repatriation, which is a collection of music recorded between 2016 and 2020 in Arusha (Tanzania), Sauraha (Nepal) and Moscow (Russia). Strictly outernational ethnic dubwise sounds. Our favourite track: Sajenio!

Hermit Dubz is out of his cave again! His sonic weapons became heavier than ever and his new album entitled “Pursuit Of Balance” is a proof of his new ability.

Traditional African melodies & chants by Dubrajah

Dubrajah - Nilotic / Dubophonic
Dubrajah, the ethnomusicologist from Russia, returns with new music. He continues to follow the path he started in 2014, demonstrating his ability to fuse a deep digital dub style with organic sounds, traditional African melodies and chants. In this new release, his third one on the label, he is inspired by the life of Nilotic people, while the track Mji Mkongwe is inspired by an old part of the Zanzibar city, which has been the melting pot of people and cross-point of cultures of Indian ocean.

Cinematographic milestone: Dubophonic meets NAKOM

Zion Dirty Sound / NAKOM film / Dubophonic
NAKOM is a film set in present day Ghana. It follows Iddrisu, a talented medical student, who returns to his home village of northern Ghana after his father's sudden death. Faced with a debt that could destroy his family, Iddrisu has no choice but to turn their farm and fortunes around. Over the course of a growing season, Iddrisu confronts both the tragedy and beauty of village life and must finally choose between two very different futures.

The film has been shown in many international film festivals  like the 66th Berlin International Film Festival and the New Directors/New Films Festival in New York. It won the Audience Choice Award at the 37th Durban International Film Festival, nominated for the Best First Feature Award at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, nominated for the FIPRESCI Prize, the Golden Firebird Award, and the SIGNIS Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, nominated for the New Directors Competition at the Seattle International Film Festival and for the 2016 Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award. In 2017 it has been selected for the Pan African Film Festival and is nominated for the "John Cassavetes" Awar.

We were very proud, honored and of course full of joy, as we were contacted by the the film directors Kelly Daniela Norris and T. W. Pittman requesting our musical contribution with the track "Cumbia Fever" by Zion Dirty Sound, released on the compilation Celebrity Fever / Reworks and Dubs, which we of course did without second thought and without any financial compensation. Massive respect to all the NAKOM crew for this great cinematographic experience and of course Djibril and Faida for the great vibes they provide us through their music.

Watch a small scene from the film, with Zion Dirty Sound's music playing on the background. Soon come in a cinema theater in your country!

No Finger Nails - Quipu Remixes

A “quipu”, was a method used by the Incas and other ancient Andean cultures to keep records and communicate information. In the ancient Quechua language of the Andes, “quipu” means “knot”. A Quipu is in fact a set of knotted loops, tied by a thicker rope supporting them.

Quipu is also a project created by Atome Primitf, a collective of musicians and "dreamers" from Europe, a project inspired by that same method of knots, stringing artistic ties and new collaborations, through cross-genre musical interpretations and audio-visual concepts.

In fact Quipu was born as an audio-visual concept. The four tracks of the EP started as original compositions of Atome Primitif, with the elements of voice, violin and acoustic guitar modeling an unplugged sound. Quipu traveled all around Europe, involving artists from different countries, each one adding their own personal knot, inspired by the compositions of Clelia Patrono.

Andrea Presicce aka No Finger Nails adds his own musical knot through his musical experience, ranging from Electronica to Dub. The EP consists of four remixed tracks, offering a very dub-ambient and mystical alternative, using the original organic sounds. The project expands also audio-visually, with videos and visuals being produced, on that same quipu idea. Dubophonic is very proud and honored to be part of this, tying its own knot in this continuously evolving project!

The EP will be entitled "Quipu remixes" and will include four tracks with a very dub-ambient and mystical atmosphere. It will be available for free download on the 29th April 2017, so watch this space!

Syrina Sound meets Dubophonic In Nicosia, Cyprus

A very special evening coming your way on the 5th Jan 2017 in Nicosia, Cyprus. Introducing you on the decks Syrina Sound and Dubophonic, blending the conscious messages of Reggae and Dub music with the modern digital sounds of Steppers.

★ Syrina Sound ★ Based in Amsterdam, Syrina Sound is a collective of two female selectors. Playing strictly vinyl, Syrina Sound brings old and new roots, reggae and dub music to the dance: from the Abyssinians, King Tubby, Aba Shanti I and Jah Shaka, to Empress Shema, King Alpha, Jah Militant and Maasai Warrior. Besides sharing their love for music, Syrina Sound has been founded to promote the contributions of women to the world of reggae and dub music.

★ Dubophonic ★ The Cypriot label provides its listeners since 2013 with quality dub music. Through artists not only from Cyprus and Greece, but from all around the world (Dub Caravan, Shaky Norman, Professor Skank, Med Dred, Mexican Stepper are just a few of them), the label is defining its own sound in dub music, exploring the outermost borders of dub music by combining the roots of reggae, the digital vibes of the new century and the ethnic sounds of world music in one big vibration.

Dubophonic jumps on the Caravan of Dub

It was a great week with Dub Caravan in Cyprus. Well, Dub Caravan is not just one man, it is a whole project. Felix Russ Abu had the idea to create a musical caravan that would always be in motion, never bound to a single location, country or city. His vision is to travel the world, recruit poets, singers, musicians and other artists to bring to the musical waves new and original exotic sounds

He arrived to Cyprus for a short stop. The Dubophonic oasis was a fertilite spot for a live performance at a place called Echo alongside Med Dred, A four hour session took place in Nicosia including an irie warmup by Unity Crew with Dub Thomas & Antreas Kassos ina rootikal dubwise style and with Christina Polykarpou improvising on the dubs with her custom made lyra, giving a special Mediterranean feeling to the whole evening. Then it became warmer and deeper as Med Dred took the mic, while Dub Caravan was following after each track with his live dubs and his creative mixing on the spot.

... and of course at the end it was time for a unity session! Give thanks to all people who were there and supported us. More to come soon!

Another session took place at the Dubophonic headquarters and was broadcasted through the airways of Outta My Yard radio. Two hours of roots and dubs with Med Dred singing and chanting and Dub Caravan performing some creative dub mixing. Enjoy!

Open call for the 1st Dubophonic remix "competition"

Open call for the 1st Dubophonic remix "competition" / Mr. Zebre ft Rebel-I / Legal
It is official, the 1st remix "competition" by Dubophonic has started and everybody can participate. This is an open call to all artists, sounds, producers, singers and players of instruments. Courtesy of Mr. Zebre and  Rebel-I, we will proceed with re-releasing a legendary tune, produced by Mr. Zebre some years ago.

The original version of LEGAL has been released back in 2012, receiving some amazing airplay, especially in Latin America. In the frame of the world wide legalisation movement, we have decided to re-release the tune for free download, but of course we will add that extra dubophonic touch by remixing it, dubbing it or even doing a complete rework.

... and everybody can participate. Just send us an email including some links to listen to your sound and we will answer you back with all the details on this project. You will get all necessary files to work on your mix. The best ones will be included in this digital online release, alongside some new heavyweight versions by Professor Skank, Mexican Stepper, Fleck, Mr. Zebre himself and many more.

Once the contest is ended, all submitted remixes will be saved in our archive and those not released may be used in future Dubophonic compilations. It is prohibited to release the tune in any format anywhere else and all rights are reserved to Mr Zebre and Rebel-I. It is nevertheless allowed the use of the mixes exclusively for live acts and dj sets.

Last submission date is the 28th of February. So start dubbing it, remixing it, or reworking it from scratch with new instruments and alternative vocals in your own language on the same subject. Let the dub games begin!
