12 Tribes Of Mars - Hidden Sun

The most enjoyable bands are those that not only surprise and amaze, but also confuse, in a positive way. Listening to the long awaited debut album of 12 Tribes Of Mars is a bit jarring. Lazy laid back beats, uptempo poppy tight rhythms, post-rock constructions, catchy themes, electronica effects. And always that recurring reggae, dub vibe and melodic earworms with many escapes towards jazz and free improvisation: how do you get it together? These are quirky musicians looking for authentic ways to express themselves.

 

Not in a loony way. All members of 12 Tribes of Mars are trained jazz musicians that are most comfortable in the borderland between musical genres. You hear craftsmanship here, carefully and cleverly constructed compositions and strong musicians who know what they are doing. I imagine an afternoon on a summery green lawn in a park, relaxed, spacey without sacrificing clarity. With eyes closed, you still dream away and wake up in a sweaty dance club. Through their spaceship, The 12 Tribes of Mars take you to many, diverse worlds within the universe of music.
